Evaluating the Characteristics of Lithium-Sulfur and Lithium-Ion Batteries for Energy Storage

Cycle life refers to the number of charge and discharge cycles a battery can withstand before its capacity drops to a certain point. The higher the cycle life, the longer the battery will last. According to a study published in ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, Li-S batteries have a cycle life of between 100 and 300 cycles, whereas Li-ion batteries have a cycle life of between 300 and 500 cycles. This means that Li-ion batteries are more durable and will last longer than Li-S batteries.

Safety

Safety is a critical factor when it comes to battery technology. Both Li-S and Li-ion batteries can be dangerous if mishandled or damaged. However, Li-S batteries are considered to be less safe than Li-ion batteries due to their propensity to catch fire when overheated. Li-ion batteries, in comparison, have a lower risk of catching fire and are generally considered to be safer.

Cost

Cost is always a consideration when evaluating a new technology. According to Gizmodo, Li-S batteries are more expensive to produce than Li-ion batteries. However, the higher energy density of Li-S batteries means that they can provide more power per unit of battery, which may offset the higher production cost over time.
